All properties connected to underground power for cyclone season

The last house in Nickol, Karratha was connected to the underground network today under the Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP), meaning all Pilbara residents can now benefit from safer, more reliable electricity this cyclone season.

Electrical Contractor Electech WA finished this work well ahead of schedule, ensuring all properties would be connected to the network before any potential cyclones, said Ziggy Wilk General Manager Pilbara Grids.

“This marks a major milestone and we are on track to complete phase two of PUPP on time and on budget thanks to the quality contractors and staff who have worked on this project,” said Mr Wilk.

“Under PUPP, a total of 7807 customers have now been connerted to the new underground network in the Pilbara, including South Hedland, Wedgefield, Roebourne, Karratha and Onslow.”

Removal of the remaining overhead powerlines and power poles included within the scope of this project will now commence and is expected to be completed by early next year.

In addition to the more visually appealing streetscapes, underground power is extra resilient to the elements during a cyclone. In the event of an outage due to adverse weather, restoring power is much quicker and far safer.

“Horizon Power would like to thank our partners and customers for their support in delivering the new underground infrastructure in the Pilbara,” said Mr Wilk.

Property restoration works will continue to take place in the coming months.  If you have any outstanding issues on your property that need to be addressed, please call the Horizon Power PUPP Access Coordinator on 9159 7253 or justine.franklin@horizonpower.com.au.
