Congratulations to Rachel Hoey, Esperance Horizon Power Sports Star of the Year

The biggest event on the Goldfields Esperance sporting calendar – the Horizon Power Sport Star Awards - was held last weekend, seeing local talent recognised for their contributions to their various sporting codes at the Esperance civic centre.

There were four categories: Sports Star of the Year, Veteran Sports Star of the Year, Junior Sports Star of the Year and Sports Team of the Year. With more than 100 Sport and Recreation Clubs within the Shire of Esperance, the competition between the nominees was tight. A number of volunteers were also recognised with Volunteer Service to Sport Awards.

Horizon Power Sports Star of the Year Award went to Rachel Hoey for hockey. As well as playing in the Esperance Hockey Association for the Mallee Hockey Club, Rachel Hoey has represented the association and played for Western Australia. She also coaches hockey locally.

Telstra Junior Sports Star of the Year went to Brayden Ainsworth for football. Brayden was awarded the Fairest and Best player at the Great Southern Carnival representing the Esperance District Football Association.

Shire of Esperance Veteran Sports Star of the Year went to Jenny Vermey for golf. Jenny won the South East Ladies Golf Association (SELGA) Singles, the Esperance District Golf Association/SELGA mixed foursome and the SELGA ladies’ foursome this year.

Department of Sport and Recreation Team of the Year went to the Scaddan Bowling Club.

Congratulations to all the winners and finalists.
