The Derby Memorial Swimming Pool will soon become home to a vibrant mural designed and painted by local artist Jessica Bidewell and more than 50 Derby kids.
The 7-metre artwork will be mounted beneath the new solar shade Horizon Power has installed at the pool as a part of its $5.2 million Renew the Regions Derby solar, battery and smart streetlights project, which will significantly reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.
Horizon Power collaborated with the Derby community on the public artwork as a part of its commitment to delivering energy solutions for regional growth and vibrant communities.
The initiative was developed in consultation with local artist Jessica Bidewell and the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley’s Youth Centre, to engage local kids and create a meaningful public space that fosters a sense of pride and belonging.
The mural depicts Derby’s underwater wildlife and was developed by Jessica as a way to share the beauty of the area.
“We may not have white beaches and blue water close by, but the colours, texture and patterns in and around Derby are a beauty to behold,” Jessica said.
“This art piece portrays the variety of culture here, along with the drift and shift of coastal waters and the vibrant creatures that inhabit the moving waters of Derby.”
Jessica said the project was a great success, and while it had sometimes been hectic, the kids had created an impressive artwork.
“It has been rewarding to see the laugher and fun in doing something that they will be proud of in the future; to reveal their part in a community project to locals and visitors.”
The pool attracts over 20,000 visits each year, making it the ideal place to display the colourful artwork and admire the handiwork of the talented young artists.
