More customers to access renewable energy through BESS

Increased access to renewable energy is a step closer for five regional Western Australian towns with Horizon Power developing pathways for new Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to be installed in Carnarvon, Marble Bar, Wiluna, Yalgoo and Yungngora.

Horizon Power is incorporating BESS across its regions of operations to increase the number of residential customers that can install rooftop solar systems. The project is being delivered as part of a broader portfolio of investments Horizon Power is undertaking as part of its role in supporting the State Government’s WA Recovery Plan.

WA-based Hybrid Systems Pty LTD, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pacific Energy Ltd, has been awarded the contract to supply and install BESS at existing Horizon Power facilities in Carnarvon, Marble Bar and Yungngora.

In Wiluna and Yalgoo, Horizon Power has expanded the scope of the existing power purchase agreements it has in place with Contract Power, another wholly owned subsidiary of Pacific Energy Ltd, to allow for the integration of BESS into ongoing arrangements for each town.

The installation of the five systems is expected to be completed by the end of December 2021 and six new jobs will be created for the duration of the delivery phase.

Horizon Power CEO, Stephanie Unwin, said the project is another example of how Horizon Power is implementing its strategic initiatives by delivering customer-tailored energy solutions, widening community access to renewable energy and maintaining a commitment to stimulating local communities by engaging local contractors and suppliers.

“I am delighted to announce that Horizon Power continues to identify unique ways to deliver on its corporate strategy either through procuring the services of suitably qualified WA-based companies, or through our existing partners,” Ms Unwin said.

“We will be installing new battery energy storage systems in nine of the regional towns that we supply, which means more of our customers will be able to take advantage of the benefits of residential rooftop solar.”

Horizon Power is also currently undertaking work to secure agreements for the supply and install of BESS in Broome, Exmouth, Gascoyne Junction and Menzies.

Over the next 18-24 months, Horizon Power will deliver 18 projects across more than 110 sites, improving energy services, access to green energy and creating local jobs and business opportunities across regional WA.
