Take action now for cyclone season

Horizon Power is encouraging people living in the north of the State to prepare for the approaching cyclone season.

Although the cyclone season typically lasts from November to March, cyclones and storms can strike at any time, sometimes with little warning, causing substantial damage to homes and properties.

Horizon Power’s Brand and Communications Manager Andrew Riches urged the community to prepare for cyclones and storms.

“It is important everybody actively prepares for cyclones and storms,” Mr Riches said.

“Spending a few hours to take a few simple precautionary steps can really help minimise damage and should be made a priority.”

“For example, hiring a professional tree contractor to trim trees at least three metres from powerlines is one of the things you can do to help prepare for cyclones and storms,” he said.

“Cleaning up around the outside of your home and making sure boats, caravans, chairs and tables are secured or stored away, will help prevent damage to your property and that of your neighbours.

“Having an emergency and relocation kit of essential items available is vital. This should include batteries for radios and torches in the event that we are unable to restore power immediately,” said Mr Riches.

An advertising campaign focusing on the risks to members of the public from live electrical wires brought down by cyclonic winds will run State-wide later this month until March on television, in newspapers, billboards and online.
