Horizon Power is offering four-year apprenticeships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a Certificate III in Electrical Fitting or Engineering (Mechanical Trade)
The apprenticeships will include both classroom training and on-the-job experience. The participants will be supported by skilled and experienced supervisors, as well as Horizon Power’s internal Aboriginal engagement team.
The aim will be to help them create pathways to long-term careers with Horizon Power itself or within the broader energy sector.
Anyone interested in applying for one of the apprenticeships or finding out more about them can attend an information session in Carnarvon on Tuesday, 19 October 2021 - where employees who have previously graduated from the apprenticeship program will share how it has transformed their lives.
Keith Hunter, from the Bidyadanga community south of Broome, completed his Remote Community Utilities Worker (RCUW) apprenticeship in 2017 and is currently one year into a distribution cable jointing apprenticeship.
“Doing the job with supervision was what I really enjoyed. It’s hands-on and I got to move around the business, learning from lots of people with different skills. The biggest challenge was learning the theory in the classroom, but the support I got from the team was great from day one,” Mr Hunter said.
“I’m proud every day to work with these boys. I really enjoy working with this mob. The team is very helpful, very good at what they do.
If you’ve got motivation, they’ll help you achieve where you want to go.”
Horizon Power’s General Manager Employee Experience, Jennie Milne, said the apprenticeship program had been revitalised and had a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women from the regions who are seeking to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of their families and communities.
“We are very excited to be able to offer these apprenticeships at our Carnarvon office in the Midwest, in support of our strategic guiding principles of Regions First, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commitment. This could truly be a lifechanging opportunity for some community members.” Ms Milne said.
